But you can also hit 3 woods and other woods, hybrids, and irons off a tee as well. Generally, the longer the shaft and the lower the loft, the harder a club is to hit off the fairway. So with a driver off the fairway, you have that going against you. It is, quite simply, the most difficult club in your bag to hit off the fairway.

You can even use 6 or 5 iron with the proper technique. The difference of a 3 iron and 5 iron is the length and loft. If you tilt a 5 iron forward, you can effectively give it the loft of a 3 iron. For these shots I take the club I need, perhaps one more or less, depending on distance and any obstacles.

Players who find the right side of the fairway (like one man in my group) can play a curving shot up over the right side or use the shortgrass and run a punch up to the green.

Graphite is commonly used to build shafts for fairway woods. That makes the shaft light and increases the swing speed, which translates into a further distance. However, you can find some clubs made from steel, although this is rare. Steel shafts are preferred by advanced golfers looking for more accuracy and those not worried about the distance.

SAN DIEGO — When Canada’s Mackenzie Hughes reached his tee shot on the par-3 11th hole in the final round of the 121st U.S. Open on Sunday, he couldn’t believe what he saw. His ball was lodged between two twigs on the branch of a tree and never came down. “I mean, it’s like one-in-a-million break,” Hughes said.

Or just do as the OP suggests, take a “root rule” drop for free. Because, you know, why not? Also ground your club in the sand, roll your ball out of a divot and play the ball beyond the white stakes for free. Why not? Rules are a man-made construct. They can’t be broken if they aren’t adhered to in the first place.

A plush oatmeal inner lining keeps your clubhead safe from dents and scratches while featuring an elastic inner lining that ensures your cover never falls off your Driver or Fairway Woods unintentionally.

The fairway is one of the parts of a golf hole and can be defined in one of two ways: The fairway is the closely mown area that runs between the tee box and putting green of a golf hole, and is the target for golfers on all holes other than par-3s (where you take aim at the green).
