The Callaway Big Bertha Alpha 816 is a great looking fairway wood with a size that will make it more playable. It’s still small by modern standards, but it’s definitely larger than its older sister. Callaway has also switched to a matte black crown for the 816.

The sleek lines of the Big Bertha Alpha 816 probably look the best of these three fairways and the squarer position at address adds to the classier, better player package, so if you can make it fly then the Alpha 816 is probably worth the extra investment. Golfalot Rating: 5 stars

I tested the Big Bertha Alpha 816 fairway wood (14 degrees) equipped with a stock Aldila Rogue I/O 70 shaft (stiff flex) both indoors and outdoors. For my first testing session I spent time measuring my launch numbers hitting off a mat to see how the club performs when the center of gravity is adjusted back and forth.

Pros: The Great Big Bertha is Callaway’s most forgiving fairway wood, and the Alpha 816 can be configured with two different CG positions (forward and back), giving better players the ability to alter launch conditions independent of loft. Both fairway woods offer some of the fastest ball speeds we’ve seen in testing.

Like the 816 Driver the Fairways are aimed at the serious golfer looking for outstanding performance. A 16g and 3g sole weight can be interchanged to either create the CG position which Tour players prefer or Callaway’s highest MOI Fairway, which is pretty impressive from one model.

Callaway Big Bertha Alpha 815 Fairway Review Callaway brings versatility and a new level of adjustability to a fairway wood in a classic-looking package. Fairway woods are some of my favorite clubs. I use my 3W off the tee for those times when I’m struggling off with the driver or just need a little more accuracy on a tighter hole.

Big Bertha Alpha 816 ($299.99) When it comes to packing as much technology as possible in a fairway woods, few models can match Callaway’s Big Bertha Alpha 816. The sound is slightly louder and more explosive than the Optiforce, but, compared to most ...
